John Sullivan was born circa 1835 in Bantry, County Cork, Ireland. He served as a Private in the 33rd (Duke of Wellington's) Regiment of Foot for 17 years. He spent 6 months stationed in Crimea, 10 and a half years in Mauritius and the East Indies, and 7 months in Abyssinia. He was further entitled to 3 good conduct badges. His conduct is remarked as 'always [having] been very good' even though he was once entered into the Regimental Defaulters Register. He discharged from service in February 1872 as he was unfit for service. He received his pension aged 37 in March 1872.
