William Williams was born in Bristol, Gloucestershire in 1832, a Labourer he attested for the Royal Marines at Leatherhead, Surrey 22nd May 1852 and re-engaged to complete time for pension 13th June 1864. Williams joined Chatham Division Royal Marine Light Infantry and served with 81st Company. He served aboard HM Ships Fisgard, Winchester, Rattler and Encounter for a period of 4 years and 271 days and aboard HMS St Jean D'Acre and HMS Hibernia for a period of 7 years and 28 days making a total of 11 years 299 days service afloat with 7 years 117 days service ashore. Awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1873 with a £5 Gratuity, he was at the time of discharge in possession of Five Good Conduct Badges, the last being awarded 23rd May 1873. Serving aboard HMS Encounter during the Second China War his Medal was sent to HMS Hibernia 23rd September 1862. Discharged 3rd July 1873 having completed 21 years and 42 days service. China Medals 1857 to 1860 were issued unnamed to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
