W. H. H. Paul attested into the 54th (2nd Belfast or North Irish Horse) Company, Imperial Yeomanry, and served in South Africa during the Boer War, where he was commissioned into the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, serving with both the 1st and 2nd Battalions. He resigned his commission on 20 September 1902.
