Lieutenant Alan Faulkner Redfern was first commissioned in August 1900 and served with the Devon Regiment in South Africa (Despatches London Gazette 7 May 1901). He joined the Indian Army in February 1903, was posted to the 7th Goorkha Rifles and served with them in Tibet.
